Using firsthand accounts of people’s lives, such as letters and diaries, gives the reader the ability to experience the writer’s thoughts, feelings, hopes, and dreams. This tactic was used by two authors to use these firsthand accounts for differing outcomes. Author James McPherson provides a comprehensive analysis of the Civil War using over 25,000 letters and 250 private diaries in his book, For Cause and Comrades: Why Men Fought in the Civil War. McPherson in his book answers to age-old questions; who was the common soldier and why did soldiers fight – what was their motivation? While McPherson answers these questions, another author uses diaries and letters of Civil War soldiers to understand the physical side of war. Author Kathryn†¦show more content†¦Other historians have used similar sources to analyze soldiers’ thoughts, emotions, and actions of Civil War soldiers. However, none has diagramed and picked apart the diaries and letters with the same questions as McPherson, such as why the men enlisted and fought in such a bloody war. Some historians believed that most of Civil War soldiers were unaware of why they were fighting. However, it has been found that in soldiers letters and diaries that soldiers did have a sense of the ideological ideas that caused the war. Troops on both sides of the war were very aware of the issues that were at stake, and it concerned them greatly. This was a civil war that would define the fate of a nation or even two. This war would shape American society and each person in it. Civil War soldiers lived in the world’s most politicized and democratic country in the mid-nineteenth century. Perspective of HRM and Organizational Performance

Question: Discuss about the Perspective of HRM and Organizational Performance. Answer: Introduction: The universal usefulness of enlistment, as per Syed and Jamal (2012), is to give the association a pool of conceivably qualified job applicants. Techniques for enrollment are specific approaches to build up the acts of every phase in the enlistment life cycle and process. The best enrollment handle contains three fundamental strides, which are resuming, selection, testing and interviewing. Companies must look for qualified applicants. Recruitment must select individuals who are educated or experienced or both (Breaugh 2014). Many superior instances of organization are available that have applied recruitment strategies soundly. One of them is Telstra. Telstra believes in change and help to get it going by associating everything to everybody, in their predicament to make a splendid, associated future for all. As a famous Australian brand, Telstra perceived their need to pull in active job seekers, as well as to contact and associate with ability not active in the employment market. Taking the position that simply enrolling the best individual searching for a part was insufficient, Telstra needed to ensure that when enlisting recognized roles that they selected the best ability out there. Telstra additionally distinguished that an adjustment in their systems to associate with the best ability was required because of an ascent of components, for example, social and versatile effects on the ability advertise (Telstra 2016). To facilitate this, Telstra used recruitment software tools to employ the CRM function ality and help recruiters adopt a new way of working. Due to the implementation of this software, Telstra started capturing significant prospect and applicantinformation, tracking advancement, correspondingand identifying proper roles effortlessly. Their placement rates increased and the time taken to fill positions reduced. References Breaugh, J., 2014, July. Employee recruitment. Problems In Education In Society Essays - Education,

Problems In Education In Society According to A Nation at Risk, the American education system has declined due to a rising tide of mediocrity in our schools. States such as New York have responded to the findings and recommendations of the report by implementing such strategies as the Regents Action Plan and the New Compact for Learning. In the early 1980's, President Regan ordered a national commission to study our education system. The findings of this commission were that, compared with other industrialized nations, our education system is grossly inadequate in meeting the standards of education that many other countries have developed. At one time, America was the world leader in technology, service, and industry, but overconfidence based on a historical belief in our superiority has caused our nation to fall behind the rapidly growing competitive market in the world with regard to education. The report in some respects is an unfair comparison of our education system, which does not have a national standard for goals, curriculum, or regulations, with other countries that do, but the findings nevertheless reflect the need for change. Our education system at this time is regulated by states which implement their own curriculum, set their own goals and have their own requirements for teacher preparation. Combined with this is the fact that we have lowered our expectations in these areas, thus we are not providing an equal or quality education to all students across the country. The commission findings generated recommendations to improve the content of education and raise the standards of student achievement, particularly in testing, increase the time spent on education and provide incentives to encourage more individuals to enter the field of education as well as improving teacher preparation. N.Y. State responded to these recommendations by first implementing the Regents Action Plan; an eight year plan designed to raise the standards of education. This plan changed the requirements for graduation by raising the number of credits needed for graduation, raising the number of required core curriculum classes such as social studies, and introduced technology and computer science. The plan also introduced the Regents Minimum Competency Tests, which requires a student to pass tests in five major categories; math, science, reading, writing, and two areas of social studies. Although the plan achieved many of its goals in raising standards of education in N.Y. State, the general consensus is that we need to continue to improve our education system rather than being satisfied with the achievements we have made thus far. Therefore, N.Y. adopted The New Compact for Learning. This plan is based on the principles that all children can learn. The focus of education should be on results and teachers should aim for mastery, not minimum competency. Education should be provided for all children and authority with accountability should be given to educators and success should be rewarded with necessary changes being made to reduce failures. This plan calls for curriculum to be devised in order to meet the needs of students so that they will be fully functional in society upon graduation, rather than just being able to graduate. Districts within the state have been given the authority to devise their own curriculum, but are held accountable by the state so that each district meets the states goals that have been established. Teachers are encouraged to challenge students to reach their full potential, rather than minimum competency. In this regard, tracking of students is being eliminated so that all students will be challenged, rather than just those who are gifted. Similarly, success should be rewarded with recognition and incentives to further encourage progress for districts, teachers and students while others who are not as accomplished are provided remedial training or resources in order to help them achieve success. It is difficult to determine whether our country on the whole has responded to the concerns that A Nation at Risk presented. Clearly though, N.Y. State has taken measures over the last ten years to improve its own education system. In many respects the state has accomplished much of what it set out to do, but the need to continue to improve is still present. Certainly, if America is determined to regain its superiority in the world, education, the foundation

Theoretical Yield Worked Example Problem

Theoretical Yield Worked Example Problem This example problem demonstrates how to calculate the amount of reactant needed to produce a product. Problem Aspirin is prepared from the reaction of salicylic acid (C7H6O3) and acetic anhydride (C4H6O3) to produce aspirin (C9H8O4) and acetic acid (HC2H3O2). The formula for this reaction is:C7H6O3 C4H6O3 → C9H8O4 HC2H3O2.How many grams of salicylic acid are needed to make 1000 1-gram tablets of aspirin? (Assume 100% yield) Solution Step 1 - Find molar mass of aspirin and salicylic acidFrom the periodic table:Molar Mass of C 12 gramsMolar Mass of H 1 gramsMolar Mass of O 16 gramsMMaspirin (9 x 12 grams) (8 x 1 grams) (4 x 16 grams)MMaspirin 108 grams 8 grams 64 gramsMMaspirin 180 gramsMMsal (7 x 12 grams) (6 x 1 grams) (3 x 16 grams)MMsal 84 grams 6 grams 48 gramsMMsal 138 gramsStep 2 - Find mole ratio between aspirin and salicylic acidFor every mole of aspirin produced, 1 mole of salicylic acid was needed. Therefore the mole ratio between the two is one.Step 3 - Find grams of salicylic acid neededThe path to solving this problem starts with the number of tablets. Combining this with the number of grams per tablet will give the number of grams of aspirin. Using the molar mass of aspirin, you get the number of moles of aspirin produced. Use this number and the mole ratio to find the number of moles of salicylic acid needed. Use the molar mass of salicylic acid to find the grams needed. Putting all this together:grams salicylic acid 1000 tablets x 1 g aspirin/1 tablet x 1 mol aspirin/180 g of aspirin x 1 mol sal/1 mol aspirin x 138 g of sal/1 mol salgrams salicylic acid 766.67Â   Answer 766.67 grams of salicylic acid are needed to produce 1000 1-gram aspirin tablets.

How to be a good mentor

How to be a good mentor Those of us who have had the opportunity to have a good professional mentor as we travel through our career paths are well aware of the value they bring- this includes everything from support, encouragement, and motivation; to opening new doors; to networking and job opportunities. The bottom line is that a good mentor is really worth their weight in gold.   That said, others among us have learned that some people who find themselves in a position to be mentors are really not well-suited for the role and can even do more harm than good. A bad mentor can hold you back from new opportunities and career advancement, set you off on a trajectory that isn’t right for you, and even sour you on an industry entirely.Clearly, the role of a mentor isn’t one to be taken lightly. It’s a tremendous responsibility, and one that could potentially give you a great deal of power and influence over someone in need of real advice, molding, and guidance. If you’re making a c onscious decision to become a mentor to someone junior to you in your field, make sure that you enter the role with every intention of being a positive influence. Consider using the following strategies to get started on the right foot.3 rules to being a strong mentorDon’t feel threatenedHere’s the raw truth when it comes to most mentor/mentee relationships: you’re helping to train the next generation of workers in your field, and they’re going to be just as ambitious as you likely were when you were just starting out and eager to climb to the top of your career ladder as quickly as possible. Take a moment to look back on those times- didn’t you have visions of eventually seizing the reins of power and filling your boss’s shoes (hopefully as they quietly shuffle out of your way)? Chances are if you’re mentoring someone they’ll likely be harboring the same ambitions.Don’t let this cloud your relationship with them or make you feel threatened and defensive- or worse, make you work against their best interests. Instead, recognize that this is a natural part of the professional cycle. As older employers mature, new employees will enter the field and hopefully gain the necessary skills and experience to one day take control. It happened for you, and one day it’ll happen for them; after all, you won’t be in the world of work forever and likely don’t want to be. The best you can do as a mentor is to help ensure that you’re placing the future of your company and industry in capable hands.Don’t do it for personal gainIn the world of work, most of us are used to the sort of â€Å"quid pro quo† arrangement where both sides get something tangible when taking part in a mutually agreed upon transaction. However, the mentor/mentee relationship is a little bit different. The fact of the matter is, there’s an inherent imbalance (of sorts) when it comes to â€Å"who gets what† here; the mentor typically devotes a significant amount of time and energy to the exchange and the mentee reaps most of the benefits- the knowledge, skills, experience, and opportunities that you’re passing along to them. It is true that mentors get the satisfaction of knowing that they’re â€Å"paying it forward† and helping out the next generation, but make sure that that’s enough of a return on your investment when deciding whether or not to be a mentor. Do it for the satisfaction of helping pave the way for someone else, and not for personal gain.Check yourselfAs we said before, becoming a mentor is a big responsibility and not one to be taken lightly. You’re going to have a real impact on the life of someone in a dependent and impressionable time in their life, so make sure you have enough time and energy to do it well. There’s nothing quite as dispiriting as having a mentor who never seems to have the time to work with you and who you’re always chasing down for help and guidance- or worse, who seems annoyed or put out by your needs. Don’t be that sort of mentor- if you commit to doing it, make sure you’re doing so with the understanding that you’re going to have to carve out a significant amount of your time and resources towards being a good and reliable source of support and guidance all the way through.Being a mentor can be a challenging role, and often the rewards aren’t immediately tangible. However, when done properly, being a positive mentor to an eager and excited individual can be an extremely rewarding and fulfilling experience. If you’re going to be a mentor, then commit to being a good one, and use the strategies and advice presented here to help you along the way.

Investing in SME's in developing countries. Discuss different facets Essay

Investing in SME's in developing countries. Discuss different facets associated with these investments (from the perspective of - Essay Example There has been an upward trend in the acquisition of private equity funds due to a number of reasons. Apart from the high returns on investment, small and medium enterprises take up private equity because the markets have been liberalized to free market economies and there is proper disclosure and financial reforms that enable transparency to be experienced at the time of investment. PE funds also enable companies fill the gap in finance in the self-financing of the company and obtaining funds from other sources. Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) have numerous definitions with each country having its own distinct definition depending on its own unique economic patterns. However, most countries base their definitions in the number of employees, value of assets or the annual turnover for a firm to qualify as a small and medium enterprise. For example, the European Union states the limits for the number of employees in SMEs to be between 200 -250, w hile Japan sets the limit as 300 employees. This starkly contrasts with the situation in USA whereby SMEs are those enterprises with about 500 employees in the firm (Murphy 7). According to the World Bank, small and medium projects are those businesses with workers not exceeding 300 in number with a yearly income turnover of $ 15 million, and resources that are valued at $ 15 million. Data made available by Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) show that almost 100% of business entities or enterprises within the grouping are small and medium enterprises accounting for 60% of employment in the private sector thereby making a substantial contribution in the development of economies of most developing nations. Developing nations define SMEs as groups of businesses that is composed of a mixture of self-employed or enterprises that have less than 10 employees and they are often found in informal sectors of the economy. The SMEs are regulated through certain princi ples that allow them to thrive in any given market. These principles include the proportionality principle that establishes an appropriate comparison or balance between risks and costs and their impact on the regulation of the business. This ensures that there are no needless or unnecessary demands placed upon the business in its regulation. The policy objectives must be transparent, clearly defined and communicated to the SMEs so that they know their prime objectives and obligations and make them aware of the expectations from the regulatory authorities. There must be accountability in the preparation of proposals and consultation before the making or taking of decisions. SMEs do well in environments where the policies put in place are consistent in application. SMEs are important in the economies of developing nations in that they provide the important revenue that translates to more tax by specific nations. They also contribute to the creation of employment opportunities and reve nue generated from exports. They are however restricted in the acquisition of funds as often, they possess little information that may be required to access funds from example bank loans. This has made such kind of enterprises to resort to private equity funds that is fast gaining ground in the world’

Joshua Bearmans story Art of the Steal Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Joshua Bearmans story Art of the Steal - Essay Example This paper illustrates that Gerald Blanchard always prepared to make his heist by investigating flaws in the security system akin to an individual’s identification of dry leaves on a tree. Effectively, proper planning and a thorough investigation always ensured Gerald’s stealing activities were an enormous success. It is pertinent to note that, Gerald started his exploits at a young age. In this regard, he had managed to become a local criminal mastermind in his neighborhood while in high school. The story Art of the Steal elucidates the escalation of his sophistication based on his shrewdness in technology formed over time from an early age. Thus, the story gives his exploits from parachuting in, changing jewels secured by a weighted alarm, and many more intriguing stories including well-organized getaways. On the other hand, his flaunty nature was a contrast to a mastermind of some of the most sophisticated crimes committed. Eventually, this behavior eventually led to a mistake that led to his arrest and consequent sentencing whereby he served a jail term. Despite the book being about acts that are criminal in nature, there are many positive lessons that individuals can draw from Gerald’s epic tales and apply them in life. First, good cognitive skills are one of the factors that contributed to Gerald’s success during his exploits regardless of the security mechanisms in the places he targeted. Cognitive skills are crucial in our daily lives to make the decisions. For example, Gerald parachuted onto the roof of the Vienesse Castle on his way to steal the Sisi Star. During the tour of the castle, Gerald realized that â€Å"There was an armed guard stationed at every entrance and patrolling the halls but the roof was unguarded†. In this case, it would take an individual with a good perception, quick learning, and reasoning to formulate the only easy way to get into the castle. Evidently, Gerald had these important skills since he figured out the easy way to get into the building and carry out the heist was through parachuting onto the unguarded roof of the castle.

The Shichi Go San and the Marimo Matsuri Festivals Essay -- pray, autum

Fall is the time for letting go of the old ways and bringing in the new life. Autumn is also the period where one harvests their desire to learn. Autumn is the time for departure but having already fulfilled in wisdom and maturity. Fall is also the time to be thankful for all the things that occurred in your life. In Japan, the fall festivals are a way for the people to pray and be thankful for the harvests. Some festivals that occur in Japan during this time of the year are: Marimo Matsuri, Nada no Kenka Matsuri, Sichi-Go-San, Tori no Ichi, and the Kawagoe Matsuri. To begin with, the Kawagoe Matsuri in the Saitama prefecture occurs on the third Saturday and Sunday in October. The main attraction of this festival is the floats that are pulled around the city. The largest highlight of this festival is the Hikkawase. This is a musical competition between different festival floats. The people perform a hayasi performance, which is a traditional Japanese orchestra of different instruments, such as the flute and drums. The floats that you might observe at this festival are called Edo-kei Kawagoe-gata, and they were usually built by the craftsmen in Edo and Kawagoe. These floats are about two stories high with a doll place on top. The Kawagoe Festival usually takes root from the Jinkosai festival, where elaborately decorated shrines are carried throughout the neighborhood. Next, the Marimo Matsuri occurs in Hokkaido around early October. This festival’s intention is to provide others with knowledge about the spherical algae and other creatures of the sea. Also, you can also learn about the history of the Ainu and their traditions. Marimo Matsuri was initially developed to shelter the endangered species of the marimo algae. Otherness

Cheyanne Easter Processor: Temple English 066 1 October 2012 Otherness Everywhere you go you catch yourself either stereotyping or being stereotyped just by the simple she lives in a big house she must be rich or he’s Asian he must be good at math. Stereotyping is usually a negative habit on all human beings but it somehow weasels its way into social acceptance. Now, more than ever and somehow we end up accepting it with no concern.Allport (1954) theory was that thinking ill of others without warrant that people make their mind u' without any personal experience. This pre judgment is worldwide it happens everywhere including every race white, black, Hispanic to what gender female or male. We are all human we all do it. One group we tend to target the most, our middle aged black men, we pracive them to be a gang member or drug dealers by their own appearance. But would it be wrong to say that hip hop may have an effect on the way people look at African American men in our socie ty.While watching an episode of the Tyra Banks show rerun an episode about stereotypes happened to be on where Tyra did an experiment where she put a group of people from all backgrounds showed them a picture of different cultured individuals and asked what and how you felt about them just by their appearance. The first picture appeared of a middle aged tall black man wearing baggy jeans, boots and an oversized jacket. People assumed right off that bat that he must not be educated, he must be on welfare trying to support his kids and baby momma was some white female’s exact words. These comments were even coming from the same race â€Å"that he must be strapped with guns and running the street as a gang banger† one African American women stated. It was sickening for people to make all these assumptions just based on their theory of stereotypes by a certain individual. He was later brought out face to face with these people to find out that he’s a very successful antrapranoer and has already earned 4 degrees. He says it the same reaction he gets from individual all the time, â€Å"it’s hard on me and that everything I’m hearing today I have to carry the weight of every African American male out there†.He explains that those type of stereotypes are the ones he has to live up to on a daily bases. You could relate this man’s experience with a young African American boy that was murdered because this man thought he was being â€Å"suspicious†. Trayvon Martin a 17 year old teenage that was shot for the simple fact that he was a black male wearing a hoodie walking through a gated neighborhood. Federals say this could indeed be a hate crime. What went through George Zimmerman’s head to shoot this innocent boy was it the first time Zimmerman’s done such type of prejudgment on black males, no.At the very least, a situation of 46 emergency calls made by Zimmerman over the past six years documents his at tentiveness about keeping his neighborhood safe and orderly. The calls include complaints about unruly people at the pool, potholes, dumped trash, and kids playing in the street. In recent months as the neighborhood saw an uptick in crime, including burglaries and a shooting, Zimmerman's calls had focused on specific suspects, the majority of them young black males.Zimmerman assumptions about these people made them his target. Some people say that this doesn’t exist in current day society but this right here is a prime example. To willingly kill a young black kid due to the fact that he walked into this residence or for the simple fact that he was cutting in-between houses, walking very leisurely for the rainy weather and looking at all the house gave Zimmerman the right to shot this innocent kid that caused death by his own prejudgment it devastates me to the bare bone. This problem will never stop. People tend to fill their head with what they want to believe. Is it wrong to say that maybe† hip hop† had a little influence on the killing of Trayvon Martin, editor in chief of GlobalGrind. com, a site about the â€Å"hip-hop† side of pop culture said â€Å"Even if I have a black hoodie, a pair of jeans and white sneakers on, in fact that is what I wore yesterday, I still never will look suspicious. No matter how much the hoodie covers my face or how baggie my jeans are, I will never look out of place to you,† he wrote. â€Å"I will never look suspicious to you, because of one thing and one thing only,  the color of my skin. † Thus, clothing lines and particular clothing items popular within the hip hop culture are Stereotyped and ignoring simplistic understandings of hip hop culture lead people to assume the role of a ordinary African American that lives day to day in our society , as drug dealers, gang bangers or want to be rappers.Do hip hop rappers influence people to assume that black men aren’t safe to be arou nd if they portray the image of rapper, is it all about getting money, smoking and having a gun. Conceptions of women and the foreigner Essay

In the ancient Greek life, women’s role was always considered to be quite insignificant as compared to the role of the Greek men. However, in most tragedies women were the major and integral characters who revealed some insights on the way the women happened to be treated and also thought in the entire society. Medea is maybe the most complex and fascinating character when we look closely to the Greek’s drama. She is an immense and an ultimate mixture of villain, heroine as well as the victim as displayed in the play. She was married to Jason who was a Greek man who she had decided to follow from the foreign land. Her love was deep and when Jason decided to leave her in order to marry Creon’s daughter she was extremely furious (Euripides1907, lines. 1-24). From there we see her getting involved in some acts of revenge. Her acts of murder are the ultimate start of revenge towards her children and her ex-husband. Despite all this catastrophes, Medea is a character to sympathize with. She decided to give up all that she had because of her love for Jason. She betrayed her family and murdered her brother, she left her home because of the love she had for Jason to a foreign land and she became a mother to please his husband yet she had no any desire to have children (Euripides, 1907,line,248). Even after Jason had known of all the sacrifices that Medea had had for him, he still had to leave her for a Greek princess. Medea’s love was quite immense and Jason’s betrayal ended up damaging her mind completely and revenge became the only comfort that she had in her power. She ended up killing the Greek princess using the cleverest chess that was available and her children. Though Medea is portrayed as one of the most frightening characters, it is crucial to compare her ethical concerns and the scheming shallow hollows of her ex husband. Medea accompanies her Antigone as the most defining heroines in the ancient Greek drama. She ended up defying her main role as the helpless and happy housewife and refutes to accept betrayal without revenging. Medea decided to abandon all the gender roles in the ancient society of Greek. She defied some perceptions of gender through portraying both female and male tendencies. She decided to detach herself from all the womanly emotions and acted in a way that the society did not see appropriate for women. In the ancient Greek, murder was an issue that was never associated with the women though Medea in the play committed a series of murder including her own children (Euripides, 1907, 207-213). It is therefore imperative to analyze at length the concepts of women and the foreigners in the Greek tragedies basing the rationale as portrayed by Medea. In the play, Medea is portrayed as a foreign witch. She is treated irrationally throughout the play by various people at divergent times. She then changes her whole character and finally triumphs over Jason. She is feasibly seen as the mortal woman and Aristotle’s hero figure as well as the goddess. Women’s rights have been neglected throughout the play and women have no voice. Medea changes all that in her revenge against Jason and her own children. Foreigners and women were loathed and had no any place in the society and were not supposed to have any powerful position. It is a play portraying chauvinism, women treated unfairly and their work portrayed as only meant to bear children. Though to an extent we see the evil deeds of Medea, we also have a glimpse on the reasons behind her deeds. She is a foreigner and to the Greeks she will always be a Barbarian. Her acts make it even hard for her as she gets hated more. Even other women treat her suspiciously. Medea is portrayed as a foreigner in her land and in her own home who has no any common feature with the Corinth women. All she had was Jason and the children. Before she got married she was viewed as a princess and later became an outcast. Women and foreigners in the Greek tragedy were portrayed as disenfranchised, slaves and were unrepresented. The acts of Medea have contradicted the view of the society that the women are the main givers of life and that the men end up taking it away. It is quite unacceptable because of the fact she is the mother to the children. Killing a member of the family was usually frowned upon in the ancient Greece like it is done today. Medea has portrayed extreme pride which is usually stereotyped as one of the characteristic of the male species. She decided to sacrifice all that she had even her reputation in order to restore her own reputation (Sophocles, Euripides & Aeschylus, 2004). It has always been a common belief that the major weakness in a woman is the children but in this case this is not so. Her pride has prevailed other maternal instincts. Medea aims to seek vengeance in the same intense force to rectify a situation just like a man would. A woman who is seeking for revenge usually challenges the societal views of women as passive and weak. Medea is dwelling on self pity until she contrives to a scheme that will avenge how much she has been hurt. Wallowing is usually a quality that is attributed to the women in the society. Medea was so sad with her life after her marriage to Jason ended that she only wanted to die. The common opinion in the society is that the women usually use trickery and deceit in order to achieve their main goals in life. Medea in this case is not an exception as she persuades Creon to permit her to stay at least one day in Corinth as she pretends that she is preparing for exile while in the actual sense she was just planning on how she will carry out the murder acts to her enemies as well as children (Euripides1907, pp. 198). Medea in the entire play has defied the stereotypes of both female and male characters. She has shown some immense emotions portrayed by both sexes. At times she acts as an ultimate man and others as a woman. The Greeks had an immense suspicion when it came to foreigners and always thought of all of them to be barbarians. With Medea, Euripides has confronted this prejudice issue by deciding to honor foreigners with some roles of a tragic heroine and making her one of the most intelligent character in the entire play. The playwright has also confirmed numerous Greek stereotypes of the foreigners through making Medea overly passionate, wild and vengeful. Medea is a very powerful and tragic heroine who gets to achieve successful vengeance and ends up escaping with impunity. In some scenarios, she is portrayed to be a submissive and weak who commits no any crime (Paul, 2006, pp. 1321-4853). Allan (2003, pp. 143) asserts that beneath Medea’s personality there lies a credible, coherent and an effective character who portrays an immense sense of justice and whose humiliation and revenge drive her to go for the revenge. He also notes that Medea’s actions and plans were affected by her main status as a foreigner and a woman and not as a mortal avenger. Euripides in his play is fascinated by the acts of women as well as the contradictions that do exist in the Greek understanding of the term gender. His treatment of the women is so sophisticated. Medea’s starting speech to the chorus is the most rational and eloquent statement on the injustices that befall the women species. He recognizes that the major position of the female and their style of subordination to men are coming from the social order that prevails in Greece. Medea is not really a role model as far as feminist is concerned. Euripides has portrayed the difficulties that women went through. He portrays an image of a real woman who has suffered and has been twisted by her suffering. It is not a story on women liberation but rather it is a war that exists between sexes. The other key is a major theme. Medea’s foreignness has been emphasized from the beginning. In the very first opening lines, the nurse reminds us that Medea is from an exotic and a distant land. The foreignness aspect is portrayed as barbaric, exotic, fearful and unknown. The issue of exile has also been portrayed in the play. Modern readers and audiences have a great difficulty when trying to conceive on the concept of exile and how much it was horrible for the Greeks. Homes and cities were considered as the major source of protection. Wandering with no friends and shelter was seen as a great fate which was much horrible than death itself. Medea just for the sake of husband made herself to be the exile. She goes away from home, have no friends or family who can offer protection to her. The theme of exile has been linked with women’s position. In emphasizing some of the circumstances in which women have to bear after marriage like leaving their homes and staying with strangers. Medea reminds us of the worst conditions in exile. Her position is a grave situation since she is already an exile in reality and portrays the fact that all women in reality are exiles. She is a foreigner thus to all the Greeks she will always remain a barbarian. In the play the issue of cleverness and cunning is also evident. These traits though they ought to be admired cause a lot of suffering to Medea. Her intellect, force and strength exceed her station of operation. Though the Greeks to an extent have some respect for her, they are seen treating her smugly just because she is a woman and a foreigner. She is surrounded by some people who are less resourceful and less intelligent than her. She is despised because of her own talents that ought to have won her praise. Since she is a foreigner she therefore behaves without morality and any restraint. In the chorus, we see how much Medea is pitied but also it reveals that women ought to endure. We see Medea entering and delivering a monologue on the sufferings that women go through. Though women are creatures that can feel and think, they have to endure some indignities in the society. Men are meant to bear arms but women are supposed to bear children (Medea 214-224, 2006, pp. 115). The theme of women and their position has been emphasized in the play. To just allege that Euripides was a great feminist can only be a major oversimplification and anachronism. What is factual is that Euripides is fascinated by the difficulties and women’s position. Through examining the treatment that women are accorded, Euripides has also revealed some of the injustices in the society. He is savvy of how art has been wrongly used in defaming the character of women and how smart it has been used in recognizing that most fables and myths of the Greeks male dominated orders through teaching women on how to accept as well as enjoy subjugation. Medea who is a woman and a foreigner has portrayed numerous specifics of the life of Greeks that are universal in today’s society. A woman when she gets married ought to leave her home in order to join her own family. Therefore she is portrayed as an outsider. Women are not meant to socialize freely as men, while men can roam wildly and indulge with other women. Medea has made herself as the main spokesman on the suffering of women thus has secured the secrecy and loyalty of the main chorus. Foreigners were people who were disliked in Greek. In the play we see how much King Aeetes’s hated the foreigners. â€Å"A great anger filled King Aeete’s heart as he listened. He did not like foreigners, any more than Greeks did, he wanted them to keep away from his country, and he himself said to himself, â€Å"if these strangers had not eaten at my table I would kill them† (Jimmison, 2009). The image of Medea and the barbarian king was irrational, magic, frightening and issues to do with some supernatural powers had no any place in the Greek mythology. As a foreigner, Medea only expected suffering since this myth was created in the Greek image of a Barbarian woman. Medea has shown numerous heroic qualities that were uncommon among the Greek women. She is even willing to kill her brother just to be with Jason. In Greek, women murdering acts were quite rare and this is something that was not supposed to happen at al. To some extent, Medea is reacting to the inferior status of injustice that women were accorded. Central to the entire plot, is Medea’s foreign origins and how they are really related to her main actions. Generally women in the play have been portrayed as creatures with very few rights. As far as men were concerned, women were only supposed to cook and clean, do some house chores and bear children. They had no imperative votes like the right to own property, vote or choose their own husbands and they had to be presented in any legal proceedings that were taking place. They were just like slaves. Though some of Medea’s actions were untypical of what a Greek woman was supposed to possess, to some extent she also had emotions and attitudes of a common woman. She speaks against some of the women’s rights and how they have no any choice to whom they decide to get married to and men can get rid of a woman in order to get whatever they wanted (Euripides, 1907,pp. 231-247). In the play we see Medea portraying some emotional attitudes of a woman and a mother. She says, â€Å"Poor heart, let them go, have pity upon the children (Euripides, 1907,pp, 1057). Also in the play women are portrayed as faithful. Medea talks of how she helped her ex husband during his quest of the Golden Fleece and even helped him to escape to an extent of killing his own brother for him (Euripides, 1907,pp. 476-483). The fact that she decided to betray her family just to be with Jason shows her sense of loyalty. Though women and foreigners were portrayed as minorities with no say, the play also shows that they were resourceful and clever. Instead of using physical force in accomplishing her plans of revenge, she went ahead to use her mind instead. She asserts, â€Å"it is best to †¦ make away with them with poison† (Euripides, 1907,pp384-385). She poisons Jason’s wife as well as the King of Corinth though she poisons them indirectly. Medea’s act of murder against her own children is because of her barbarian origins. The major reason why Jason decided to let go of Medea and marry a princess is in order for her to have a higher status and material wealth through getting married to the king’s daughter (Euripides, 1907,pp553-554). It is lucid hence to note that Jason had a belief that Medea’s foreign origins were a burden and a distracter to him since there was a stigma that was related to that. Medea’s foreign status is also a major burden to her. Once they got separated, she became an outsider and had no any place to go since barbarians were never highly thought in the Greek society. If Medea was not a foreigner, then it is possible that Jason would not have divorced her. Medea is a play that portrays the real ancient Greeks and their attitudes towards the foreigners and women. Women were supposed to be seen and not heard and thus Medea surprises the Greek society since she goes against the norms. Women were supposed to bear children and take care of their husbands. The women’s rights were less considered and there was no way women could equal men. The foreigners had no any right and were also treated unfairly. It is a play revealing some of the heroic acts of women and what they had to go to get noticed in the society. Works Cited Allan, William. Euripides: Medea. 2002. De Broglie Wavelength Hypothesis Overview

De Broglie Wavelength Hypothesis Overview The De Broglie hypothesis proposes that all matter exhibits wave-like properties and relates the observed wavelength of matter to its momentum. After Albert Einsteins photon theory became accepted, the question became whether this was true only for light or whether material objects also exhibited wave-like behavior. Here is how the De Broglie hypothesis was developed. De Broglies Thesis In his 1923 (or 1924, depending on the source) doctoral dissertation, the French physicist Louis de Broglie made a bold assertion. Considering Einsteins relationship of wavelength lambda to momentum p, de Broglie proposed that this relationship would determine the wavelength of any matter, in the relationship: lambda h / p recall that h is Plancks constant This wavelength is called the de Broglie wavelength. The reason he chose the momentum equation over the energy equation is that it was unclear, with matter, whether E should be total energy, kinetic energy, or total relativistic energy. For photons, they are all the same, but not so for matter. Assuming the momentum relationship, however, allowed the derivation of a similar de Broglie relationship for frequency f using the kinetic energy Ek: f Ek / h Alternate Formulations De Broglies relationships are sometimes expressed in terms of Diracs constant, h-bar h / (2pi), and the angular frequency w and wavenumber k: p h-bar * kEk h-bar * w Experimental Confirmation In 1927, physicists Clinton Davisson and Lester Germer, of Bell Labs, performed an experiment where they fired electrons at a crystalline nickel target. The resulting diffraction pattern matched the predictions of the de Broglie wavelength. De Broglie received the 1929 Nobel Prize for his theory (the first time it was ever awarded for a Ph.D. thesis) and Davisson/Germer jointly won it in 1937 for the experimental discovery of electron diffraction (and thus the proving of de Broglies hypothesis). Further experiments have held de Broglies hypothesis to be true, including the quantum variants of the double slit experiment. Diffraction experiments in 1999 confirmed the de Broglie wavelength for the behavior of molecules as large as buckyballs, which are complex molecules made up of 60 or more carbon atoms. Significance of the de Broglie Hypothesis The de Broglie hypothesis showed that wave-particle duality was not merely an aberrant behavior of light, but rather was a fundamental principle exhibited by both radiation and matter. As such, it becomes possible to use wave equations to describe material behavior, so long as one properly applies the de Broglie wavelength. This would prove crucial to the development of quantum mechanics. It is now an integral part of the theory of atomic structure and particle physics. Macroscopic Objects and Wavelength Though de Broglies hypothesis predicts wavelengths for matter of any size, there are realistic limits on when its useful. A baseball thrown at a pitcher has a de Broglie wavelength that is smaller than the diameter of a proton by about 20 orders of magnitude. The wave aspects of a macroscopic object are so tiny as to be unobservable in any useful sense, although interesting to muse about.

Consumer protection Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

Consumer protection - Essay Example f acts of parliament have been established to ensure the protection of the consumers and ensure that government agencies follow established standards. The English tort and the English contract law were the first established acts that were established to ensure the consumer protection in the country remain stable. A number of departments have also been established including the department of trade, industry, price, and consumer protection. The establishment of European community’s act of 1972 also enhanced the country’s effort to protect the consumers from illegal and exploitative business practices (Jay & Clarke, 2010). Despite the massive development in consumer protection law in the United Kingdom, the effort to protect consumers from poor processed products and exploitative business practices has met a number of challenges. In this paper, the challenges of the efforts adopted in the United Kingdom to protect the consumers will be discussed. The paper will also highlight the methods that are used by the consumer rights bills to overcome consumer protection challenges (Cartwright, 2008). The consumer rights bill was recently introduced to the United Kingdom parliament for deliberation, enhancement and possible adoption after passing through the House of Lords. This bill is believed to have the power to streamline the consumer protection efforts in the country and update retrogressive consumer protection laws. Based on the consumer rights bill, consumers have core rights, which must be respected by other businesses and legal entities in the country. These include the right to be paid and enjoy goods and services which meets the established standards. Consumers also have the right to fault the products and services they buy and to expect a refund or replacement in the event that the producer is at fault. The consumer rights bill is currently before the House of Lords in the country’s legislature and expected to be ratified and adopted by the country.

Canada's Maple Leaf Bust Crack Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words

Canada's Maple Leaf Bust Crack - Essay Example Articles by the media in the summer of 2008 covered reports on the outbreak showing colorful slips of a ‘listeriosis investigation’ eventually turned to entire wrenched, gray pieces such as â€Å"Sorry Situation† (Brent, 2008). In December following the summer which became a funeral mourning 22 million deaths upon the eating of cold-cuts sold by Maple Leaf Food’s two tainted lines at the entity’s Toronto headquarters, a $27 million-dollar class action lawsuit disabling a company which had already suffered a deficit that semester, the report fell that safety measures had shattered. Litigation inched its way into the top Canadian food-processing industry as the sentient illness forced its way across papers, the public opinion crying out a public timeline: â€Å"Listeriosis Outbreak in Toronto Now Linked to Five Deaths† (Ewing, 2008) in August, â€Å"Sorry Situation† (Brent, 2008), for September’s glow, and October’s gold-ree l, â€Å"Maple Leaf finds new listeria cases† (Elliott, 2008). President and chief-executive of the mega multi-billion dollar service-issuer in a clear concise way emulated a stream of heartfelt warmth to the public betwixt the sparkling timeline filled with protocol and positive results. In 2004 an article by Salvage entitled, â€Å"Petite hams pack a punch: smaller products are designed for on-the-go families,† excited consumers before four years along the timeline later another enchantment, â€Å"Maple Leaf designs pigs for markets† (Bertin, 2001), again stole the market. ... Total net revenue earnings were stunted by comparison with the previous year of 2005 in the range of $48.6 million and $815.9 million as opposed to the prior offsetting $101.9 and $800.8 million of agribusiness income and sales. Yet a hardwood-smoked, boneless, two pound ham offered a beautiful competition, on which a new sensation was being brought up, which elevated flexibility, color-binding, color and protein maximization at the foreground of a link between restructuring costs and Maple Leaf food designs, which was gaining speed in the race of the farmer’s market phenomenon. As all members of the now global indiscriminate ravager that has made its unique debut as the food industry must fall under the trick eventually, all facets indubitably must be tempted by that dollar which is called progress. Maple Leaf Incorporations won a nationally-esteemed award which bounded off its renovated products in 2011. While unpredictability should no doubt be a factor after the outbreak t wo years earlier, Canada’s grocer spontaneously waltzed to the front of the better end of its crisis quite literally, as the informational media announcement on paper specified in the heading called, â€Å"Contrite Maple Leaf vaults to forefront of food safety,† Sperber’s 2010 praise that detailed management’s proactive response to the fiasco two years prior. Even still Maple Leaf’s attempts at safety protocols and mandates before the widespread incident was in a small way commendable. In a spill of paramount thanks to the company’s chief executive and President Michael McCain, who inarguably urged to employ higher-tech equipment to ensure 2002 meat safety, Maple Leaf won the Annual Food Safety Leadership Award in 2006. The Importance of Ethics to Sustainable Growth in Engineering Research Paper - 1

The Importance of Ethics to Sustainable Growth in Engineering Enterprise - Research Paper Example Findings reveal that China’s rules and regulations related to ethical standards are not implemented strictly but it has given more importance to CSR programmes. UK on the other hand has ignored CSR programmes but is successful in incorporating various employee training programmes. While UK companies apply technology to monitor whether ethics are practised in the workplace, Chinese companies use compliance programmes. Theft of asset is a serious problem in UK while the problem of deficiency of stringent laws causes lack of ethical practices in workplace. Chief CSR officer is given the responsibility of making profit making decisions and monitoring ethical standards. The green officer along with board members takes the authoritative decisions in the company. Employees both in UK and China want ethical code of conducts in the office. However, Chinese employees believe that small firms are unable to properly implement ethics in the workplace. According to Daft (2012), data analysis is a process of evaluating the study on the basis of findings and literature review. The project is primarily based on secondary data accompanied by the interview conducted on six Chinese Engineering Companies. The secondary data is collected from journals and books of eminent authors. The primary data in the form of questionnaire survey aims at providing knowledge regarding the existing conditions of the company’s policies and the perspectives of the employees about ethical standards. Since work culture in UK represents the work environment in western companies and China represents eastern work culture, wide contrasts are noted in the study. It has been observed in the UK that titles like â€Å"chartered engineer†, â€Å"engineering technicians†, â€Å"information and communications technology technicians† and â€Å"incorporated engineer† are granted by the Engineering Council UK (Basart, Farrà ºs and Serra, 2015). The incorporated engineers of UK are

Outline Of Critique Of W E B Dubois History Essay

Outline Of Critique Of W E B Dubois History Essay W.E.B. DuBois, is one of the greatest African American thinkers, oraters and writers of history. His works are often bold assassinations of the development of the Black, former slave class in the US, through periods were they repeatedly faced bold and subtle racism but were simultaneously expected to be successful, because laws were, better than they used to be. DuBois work The Souls of Black Folk, though constituent of several divergent essays is to many the source and center of nearly all his messages regarding the truth telling that needs to be done, in history to properly place the plight of Blacks into the context and even to some extent the present. According to the editor of the W.E.B. DuBois reader, which republished the whole of The Souls of Black Folks in its pages the works purpose is;to transcend the pain and liabilities of the past while remembering and restoring the power of the African American heritage- and this theme, à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦runs throughout The Souls of Black Folk. No work before or since has met the challenge so well. (Sundquist 99) Summary As was stated in the introduction The Souls of Black Folk, consists of several thematic essays regarding the position and reality of black life through its history in the US. Each work discusses a theme of necessary report and honesty. According to DuBois himself, in his forethought to his collection he ..sought here to sketch, in vague, uncertain outline, the spiritual world in which ten thousand thousand Americans live and strive. (DuBois 100) The first two essays discuss the meaning of emancipating to blacks, and its aftermath. The third chapter deals with the relatively slow progress of personal leadership, criticizing heavily the president of the Tuskegee Institute, for capitulating to the idea that trade skills rather than intellectual development is the necessary next step in the development of blacks. In two additional chapters he juxtaposes the world of blacks in and outside what he calls the veil i.e. the black world and black men in the white world, and dealing specifically with how such a color line as it exists could realistically train black men to live productive lives. He then covers black poverty in two chapters and closes with a chapter on what he calls the, present relations of the sons of master and man. (Dubois 100) Black Spirituals as Thematic Introductions It as been pointed out by many that Dubois use of black spirituals to open the themes of his essays was masterful in several ways, in part because it sets the tone for how the theme to be discussed realistically played a part in the lives of blacks, as such spirituals were often the only form of mass communication available to black men and women during large periods of their history in the US. Additionally, he has been praised for their use because they cannot be found anywhere else, as an oral tradition, forced by the illegality and if not then the unconventional allowance of literacy among blacks. The black spiritual loses is power as those who have used it to communicate joy and woe begin to die off, as with all other oral traditions, the death of people often marks the death of tradition, if such tradition is not communicated effectively to the next generation. This loss, is substantial and in some ways DuBois purpose is to stress the deeper meanings of these spirituals by intel lectual and political discussion, that he as an educated African American can do. Most importantly an educated African American man, who unlike Washington, was willing to tell the truth, rather than capitulate to the standards of white society, in his beliefs assertions and expectations of his brethren. A foundational example, and theme that pervades the work can be seen in the spiritual he uses to introduce the theme of chapter 2, Of the Dawn of Freedom. Careless seems the great Avenger;/Historys lessons but record/One death-grapple in the darkness/Twixt old systems and the Word;/Truth forever on the scaffold,/Wrong forever on the throne; (DuBois 107) The chapter stresses the extreme juxtaposition of legal emancipation, following his first chapter which discusses the great hope that emancipation and freedom would be real, and the lack of real systems to allow for the development of black men and women that follow it. DuBois makes clear that the hope was met with constant dashing, a s the reality of the world of blacks was constantly stunted by traditions, fear and racially motivated systems that still barred blacks from success and the expression of free will. Truth Telling There is no better chapter to discuss with regard to truth telling in DuBois work that that which adamantly attacks Booker T. Washington. Washington, in the eyes of many whites (and even some blacks) had the most logical and rational response to the development of blacks in society. These men and women would need to be trained to do work, work that is demonstrative of their previous restricted options. Washington believed that the black race would be most successful if instead of fighting for the right to hold positions and vocations that had been previously reserved only for the majority, they would seek to work with their hands and train to make those works more productive. To DuBois and other intellectuals this was an assault on blacks as it continued to stress that their abilities were less than those of whites and perpetuated the idea that most blacks would not be able to hold real positions of vocational power, such as those achieved through traditional white only higher educat ion. DuBois stresses that Washingtons capitulation, offering one of the only advanced education options for blacks as a trade school, that did not stress the need to develop intellectually was paramount to supporting white society, as blacks had always done. The Tuskegee institute did not train the first round of black attorneys, doctors, professors, entrepreneurs or anything like them it continued to train blacks to provide services to whites, only to do it more scientifically and better. Not only that but Washington came to a position of influence precisely at time when it might have been possible to begin to offer blacks better options than trade training and yet he chose to capitulate, and as the only scale offering of any advanced education to blacks his school succeeded and his ideology of a, à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦programme of industrial education, conciliation of the South, and submission and silence as to civil and political rights, was supported. (DuBois 122) DuBois, chose to chal lenge Washington, who was seen by many as one of if not the most important black man of his time as a capitulator who chose to teach complacency over change. This is not DuBois telling a wrongful truth of the white race, it is him attacking a man of his own race for buying and selling the black man limitations rather than real fruits of freedom. In Washingtons own words there is a tell tale truth to Dubois frustration, with him and others who would continue to hold freed black men and women to standards that were not inclusive of their real abilities to progress. In the economy of God there is but one standard by which an individual can succeedthere is but one for a race. This country demands that every race shall measure itself by the American standard. By it a race must rise or fall, succeed or fail, and in the last analysis mere sentiment counts for little. During the next half century and more, my race must continue passing through the severe American crucible. We are to be tested in our patience, our forbearance, our perseverance, our power to endure wrong, to withstand temptations, to economize, to acquire and use skill; in our ability to compete, to succeed in commerce, to disregard the superficial for the real, the appearance for the substance, to be great and yet small, learned and yet simple, high and yet the servant of all. This, this is the passport to all that is best in the life of our republic, and the Negro must possess it, or be debarred. (Denton 189) According to Washington, Negroes in America must face the reality of the American system, work within it and stop or refrain from seeking higher (unreal) answers to their options to succeed. Washington believed that there would be a time when challenging these roles was an option, but right now blacks needed to suck it up and excel at what was offered them, trades. To DuBois, this was offensive, as it belittled blacks and gave them little if any hope for change, and any real fundamental application of the strides made from emancipation or the frustration of reconstruction. DuBois stresses that there are many who criticize Washingtons capitulation, but that he chooses not to, because there is danger in silence; But the hushing of the criticism of honest opponents is a dangerous thing. It leads some of the best of the critics to unfortunate silence and paralysis of effort, and others to burst into speech so passionately and intemperately as to lose listeners. (DuBois 124) DuBois, stres ses that he and other opponents of Washingtons policies and ideologies would like to see the silence end and the cry for and allowance of three essential things, for Blacks, in America 1. The right to vote. 2. Civic equality. And 3. The education of youth according to ability. (DuBois 128) Conclusion DuBois work The Souls of Black Folk is a fundamental document that should be read and understood by all who have any interest in black history and the way in which this history is portrayed. DuBois, unlike many mainline thinkers is demonstrative of a strong, educated black man worthy of praise and capable of intellectual musings regarding a whole group of people who were fundamentally silenced for most of their history in this nation. The use of the spiritual aspect as the thematic source of the work is also an essential strength, as even though many of DuBois words are wholly secular in nature the ideologies that he attests to should have a firm place in the spiritual character of hope, hope for change and hope for voice.

Church and Teens :: essays research papers

We all know the horror stories about being forced to go to church each and ever Sunday, and there are so many teens that see going to church as an inconvenience, but why do we look at it that way? Could it be because we don’t understand the concept? Maybe it’s because we think Sunday is our â€Å"sleep day† to catch up on the loss of sleep from the rest of the week. There are a lot of teens that enjoy church because they understand the concept, or because that is the only place they feel that they can be themselves. I can honestly say that I have been on both sides of this spectrum. I was once a teen who decided that every Sunday would be a day to sleep instead of a day to worship. Now, however, Sunday’s are the days that I get up out of bed at 8:00 and I go to church. I’m sure you’re thinking, why on earth would she want to get up so early just to go to church to sing some stupid songs and listen to some boring man preach? Well, for me†¦ it’s therapy for my soul and for my life.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Things have a weird way of happening to me when I least expect them, and this whole church thing is definitely one of those weird things. I came to a point in my life about 4 months ago where everything was going wrong and I wasn’t sure what to do. My friendships were fading, my personal life wasn’t the best it could have been, and I definitely needed to reevaluate my lifestyle. Just when I thought that nothing could go right, along came this boy that changed me more than anyone has ever been able to. Although I didn’t expect it then, and I really didn’t notice until recently, he has made me a better person.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  One day we were driving and he asked me if I wanted to go to church with him. A little skeptical at first, I agreed and that’s what started it all. Since that Sunday, I have been regularly attending Wesley Free Methodist Church and I can honestly say that I love it. The sermons are directed toward the entire congregation and not just towards one group, and they are definitely well thought out and well preached.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚     Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The best part about this church is that the youth group plays a big part in all that we do.

Issues of Foreign Workers Policy in Malaysia Manufacturing Industry

Introduction On March 7, 2011 The Star, we know that our Malaysia government had decided to recruit more foreign workers from India which around 45,000 people from India. This is to meet the demand by around 13 sectors which currently in shortage of workforce. So, this resulted in many people and The Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC) had strongly opposed the decisions made by government. The Malaysian Trade Union Congress (MTUC) is said as the most representative workers’ organization in Malaysia.Three main objectives emphasized by MTUC: first is to promote the interest of its affiliate unions in order to improve the workers’ economic and social conditions. Second is to ensure the policies are developed and action been taken towards make sure that full employment and setting a minimum wage, a legal maximum working period per week which is 44 hours and served as a training centres for workers. Thirdly, build a Social Security measures that provide retirements benefi ts, as well as protection against sickness, unemployment, injury, and old age.Overall, MTUC was served to protecting the workers interest or fight for them. According to Nagiah Ramasamy (2008), our Malaysia trade union movement is facing many challenges, which are from neoliberal policies and the changing structures of employment. Due to the strict requirements of the Trade Union Act 1959, Malaysia union are normally small fragmented and regional. But, they still protest the decision of recruiting more foreign workers from India which might harm our local workers benefit. Some local workers are too picky on job selection and they don’t want to work unless there is high salary, benefit or bonus waiting for them. So, attitude towards the job is their main problem. So, the employers forced to retrenched the local workers and recruiting the foreign workers by outsourcing or others way. The objectives of this assignment are to figure out the problems facing by Trade Unions in Malay sia on migrant and domestic workers. Furthermore, we also know that the impacts of the foreign workers policy in manufacturing industry. In this assignment, we have a more understanding on foreign workers policy as well as the ways to overcome it in future trend. Literature Review According to A. Navamukundan (n. d. ), employers are cost-conscious and choose workers who are not only inexpensive but also have the necessary skills and comply with strict discipline and hard work. The preference will be for immigrant foreign workers, who will accept both lower wages and worse terms and conditions of employment, as their primary objective is to earn as much money as possible within a short span of time. Those are the reason why the population of immigrant foreign workers are increasing years by years. A study done by Philip S. Robertson Jr (n. d) stated that the Malaysian Government does not have a comprehensive legal and policy framework to regulate the recruitment, admission, placement, treatment, and repatriation of migrant workers. Oversight of migrant workers is divided among ministries, and even within ministries, between various departments. Therefore, foreign worker can easily migrate to our country to find a job which offers them the salary that is higher than their own countries. This has become a threat to the local workers. Nagiah Ramasamy (n. d) proposed that the challenge for union leaders is to build a union movement that can respond effectively to the threats and opportunities that it faces with the growing influence of MNCs and the growing numbers of bilateral trade agreements. Trade unions can help in improving occupational health and safety, decent work and social dialogue with government and employers. It is so obvious that trade union play an important role in fighting for local worker’s right. A study presented by U. S.Department of Labor stated the Government of Malaysia revised its policy on foreign workers so that priority would be give n to Malaysians seeking employment due to the world economic slowdown and increased unemployment in 2001. The Government has limited documented workers to a three year stay and is cracking down on unregistered foreign workers, with new amendments to the Immigration Act calling for harsh penalties. According to Kgaogelo Elizabeth Mokoka (2007), most South African nurses immigrate to destinations such as UK, Saudi Arabia, New Zealand, Australia and the USA (Xaba & Phillips 2001).In a study commissioned by the World Health Organisation (WHO), Buchan et al (2003) identified two groups of countries in terms of nurse emigration and mobility. â€Å"Destination countries† are those to which nurse are drawn, while â€Å"source countries† are those that nurse are drawn from. Destination countries include five countries, namely Australia, Ireland, Norway, the UK and the USA. According to Mr. Ajit Singh Jessy from the Penang Human Resources committee, salary remains as one of, or the most, important factor in the retention of workers. As such, the complaints of local workers regarding wage levels are not baseless, especially when it comes to menial forms of labour. What may be baseless is the argument that locals shun these jobs which then have to be farmed out to foreign labourers. According to Cecilia Kok (2011), for South and Southeast Asian economies, especially those that are lagging behind Malaysia, many migrant workers perceive a land flowing with milk and honey. Official data show that Malaysia attracts a huge number of migrant workers into the country.According to official record, the number quadrupled from less than 500,000 in 1999 to more than two million, representing about 17% of the country's workforce in 2008. Vijayakumari Kanapathy (2006) proposed that foreign workers in large numbers were seen as a security threat as the rising crime rate and incidence of highly contagious diseases were associated with them. Such popular perception was co mpounded by the belief among policy makers that heavy reliance on low-skilled foreign labour will trap the economy in low-wage low-skill equilibrium and slow down the much-warranted economic transformation into high-skilled activities.According to the International Organization for Migration (n. d. ), there are approximately 2,109,954 migrant workers currently working in Malaysia, 50 per cent are Indonesian labour migrants, indicating the scale of Indonesian labour migration to Malaysia. The majority of labour migrants arriving in Malaysia originate from other South and Southeast Asian countries, mainly attracted by the higher salaries that are covered in Malaysia compared with their countries of origin.A study done by FEDERATION OF MALAYSIAN MANUFACTURERS (2010) stated that Manufacturing companies are currently reporting an increase in orders. However, many are facing difficulties accepting and fulfilling orders due to a shortage of workers. Some have to turn away orders while othe rs are penalised for late delivery. There are also companies recording losses because they have not been able to fulfill orders. Development of the Issues Important of Manufacturing Industry and Contribution to GDP The Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of Malaysia is depends on its agricultural ector, manufacturing industries and the service sectors. Purchasing power parity (PPP) is a theory which states that exchange rates between currencies are in equilibrium when their purchasing power is the same in each of the two countries. This means that the exchange rate between two countries should equal the ratio of the two countries' price level of a fixed basket of goods and services. In 2008, the agricultural sector had contributed 9. 7 % towards the country’s GDP. The contributions of the manufacturing industries were estimated as 44. % and that of service sector was 45. 7 % towards the country’s GDP. As per the GDP- PPP, Malaysia is ranked 29th in the world. A GDP growth rat e of 20 % was noticed towards the end of 20th century. The Gross Domestic Product nominal of Malaysia in 2009 was estimated as US$ 207,400 billion in 2009 and that of GDP-PPP was estimated as $ 3. 9 billion. The GDP nominal per capita in 2009 was estimated at US $8,100. Analysis of challenges facing by Trade Union in Malaysia Number of foreign workers is growing-1. 6 million in 2005 to 1. million in 2010 (figure 1). According to Philip S. Robertson Jr. , Malaysians have a bad altitude of not willing to perform jobs that they consider as 3-D (dirty, difficult and dangerous), creating demand for foreign workers in sectors like plantations/agriculture, construction, manufacturing, and some service occupations. The Malaysian Trades Union Congress said today it opposes strongly the proposed mass recruitment of 45,000 foreign workers because it would edge out locals from the labour market. According to MTUC vice-president A.Balasubramaniam, a profound effect on the wages of Malaysians cou ld be caused by such a big influx of foreigners and the government’s high-income policy for them would be jeopardized too. Moreover, locals are being deprived or discriminated if they are competing with foreign worker for the opportunity of being chosen to work overtime according to Ministry of Human Resources Malaysia. A study done by Syarisa Yanti Abubakar, from the short-term point of view of employers, migrant labour will only be hired only if doing so is more cost effective compared to other existing alternatives. That’s why locals are left behind because their cost of hiring is far higher than that of foreign worker. Besides that, according to Ministry of Human Resources Malaysia, more and more local workers are retrenched and replaced with foreign workers. This is resulted by the actions taken by many manufacturing companies of outsourcing foreign workers through some agencies. Furthermore, altitude is another reason which cause the retrenchment of local workers such as thinking too highly on themselves, not willing to do those ‘non-air conditioned’ job and so on.STATISTICS OF FOREIGN WORKER IN MALAYSIA Statistics PLKS by Citizenship and Sector, Feb 2010 (Source: Immigration Department) STATISTICS OF FOREIGN WORKER IN MALAYSIA Statistics PLKS by Citizenship and Sector, Feb 2010 (Source: Immigration Department) Figure 1 Implementation Various foreign worker policies are implemented by the to control the influx of illegal foreign workers. According to economic report 2004/2005, these include the Foreign Worker Rationalisation Programme to legalise illegal workers, amendments to the Immigration Act, 1977 and imposition of an annual levy.In addition, several Memorandum of Understanding (MOUs) were signed with labour exporting countries to authorise legal recruitment of foreign workers. All of these had resulted the employer’s preference more towards foreign workers but not the locals and this preference has come along with t hree obvious activities according to a study done by the Ministry of Human Resources Malaysia. The first is the number of the application on recruiting foreign workers is significantly increasing as we can know from a statistic that there are average 20,000 foreign workers approved every month in Malaysia.Secondly, most of the employers are not taking serious altitude in recruiting locals. Those applications from the employer mostly from manufacturing industry are bypassed while going through the ELX system to ensure the objective of recruiting foreign workers can be achieved. Lastly, large portion of foreign workers in Malaysia are employed through the outsourcing companies to escape the quota limit. If the employer directly hires foreign workers from source countries, they will be facing the quota limitation and therefore they hire the foreign workers through a third arty. Advantages According to Daniel Lee and Richard Ho (2011 Nov), many employers complain that their business act ivities will come to a dead stop if they forbid them to use foreign workers because the jobs in those sectors are perceived to be dirty, difficult and demeaning to the average Malaysian. Therefore, they have to utilize foreign workers and sing praises of hiring such workers, supposedly of a labor category that is easy to utilize, simple to manage and that does not make demands for wages increases. Some local employers have voiced out in support for the hiring of foreign workers that many among them have threatened to blot out and relocate if their demands for â€Å"low-cost† foreign workers are unmet. As such, foreign workers fill up the empty space as they are not opposed to working in dirtier, more dicey conditions and longer hours for equal or lesser pay thereby keeping labor costs relatively low and helping to keep Malaysia competitive against other low-cost producing countries. They also serve as a buffer during times of recession as they help sustain.Disadvantages Accord ing to Ken CK (2002), the economic profit that gained from foreign workers has resulted in social costs and social problems, for example rising crimes, fraud, social deviance, health care costs and the transmission of communicable diseases including HIV/AIDS. This is because their unsafe sexual behavior through commercial sex, and casual homosexual and heterosexual activities. Furthermore, according to Syarisa Yanti Abubakar (2002), migrant labours will only be hired only if doing so is more cost effective compared to other existing alternatives. This will cause the locals are being deprived or discriminated if they are competing with foreign worker for the opportunity of being chosen to work overtime according to Ministry of Human Resources Malaysia. According to Ministry of Human Resources Malaysia, nowadays local workers are retrenched and replaced with foreign workers and this will resulted by the actions taken by many manufacturing companies of outsourcing foreign workers throug h some agencies.Altitude is also another reason which causes the retrenchment of local workers because they think too highly on themselves and not willing to do those 3D jobs (dirty, difficult and dangerous). Effects of Foreign Worker Migration to Manufacturing Industry According to Ministry of Human Resources Malaysia, there must be no discrimination in treatment by employer on local and foreign workers in respect of wages and terms and conditions of service. According to K George, the government has finally decided to extend equal treatment to foreign workers and also Human Resources Minister Dr.Fong Chan Onn announced that foreign workers employed in Malaysia would be treated equally in accordance with the provisions of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) convention which Its function is to safeguard the rights and dignity of the working people all over the world. Recommendation Foreign worker indeed have contributed to the growth of economy, but too dependent on this gro up of foreign workers to drive our economy cannot be carry out in long term as this may drag our country economy. To stop dependence of foreign worker in our country cannot be done away overnight as a sudden repatriation of them can have a serious impact on the economy. Therefore a careful planning and cooperation from employer and government is needed. One of the ways to ensure employers lower down the foreign worker and shift to employ locals are by quotas system. Quotas of foreign employee can hired in one company should be set by the government to stop them over relying to foreign worker and hire more local.Different quotas should be set differently according to the supply and demand because the supply for local labour in certain industry is low for example construction. Quotas should be raise for a certain period of time to minimize the impact to the industries. Government can reduce the amount of foreign worker by increasing levy on foreign worker to a high amount where there a re no cost saving benefits in employing foreign worker to encourage the employer uses local worker. When the cost of hiring a foreign worker is higher compare to local worker, employer will choose to use local worker because they can save cost thus ill eventually increase the amount of skilled local worker in Malaysia which will increase the productivity and move Malaysia into a high income country. Both employer and government play a big role in order to reduce the country dependence on foreign worker. Employer who over depend on cheap foreign worker should try to shift use local to increase the productivity in long term while government should implement better regulation and enforce them to punish those employer which break the rules for using illegal immigrant in their firm and to prevent illegal immigrant to enter our country. Conclusion In conclusion, we had more understanding about foreign workers policy in Malaysia. Nevertheless, the foreign workers play an important role as o ne of the workforce in our country since decade years. They bring their skills from their country and practice them at here. But, it also brings some problem and cases to us which even make our government headache. So, law enforcement should be taken serious, as we should treat the arrest and detention of undocumented migrant workers as an administrative offence, and not a criminal matter. These undocumented workers will affect our daily life, as they would commit crime or practice illegal activities in our country which make our government hard to tackle on them since we don’t have their personal detail and document. So, enforcement on foreign works policy is vital. Besides that, instead we relying on foreign workforce, we know that it would be better for us to consider more on our domestic workers which can also have equivalent level of skills and performances. This also follows to our MTUC aim which suggested that giving priority to our local workers. Of course, our domestic workers also need to improve themselves, not matter on hard-skills or soft-skills; we should upgrade our own knowledge and skills to fight in economy and global competition. It should be making clear that the interactions between governments are extremely important. The trade union leader should try to come out an agreement with the government on foreign workers policy which will benefit foreign workers and our Malaysian at the same time.If does, it will be the win-win situation between two country.
